What a Concrete Patio Really Costs in Anne Arundel County, From the Guy Who Builds Them

The first question I get at almost every estimate is some version of the same thing. What's this going to cost me? Fair question. It's the first thing I'd ask too. So instead of making you fill out a form and sit through a pitch just to get a number, I'm going to tell you what concrete patios actually cost around here and what makes that number move.

I'm Bobby. I own Backyard Bobby's, and I've lived in Anne Arundel County my whole life. I'm licensed and insured (MHIC #05-163777). The numbers below come from real jobs in real backyards in places like Severna Park, Pasadena, Crofton, and Millersville. Not a national cost calculator. This county, this weather.

The Short Answer

Most patios I pour run 300 to 500 square feet. So a straightforward broom-finished patio usually lands between $3,000 and $6,000 all in. A stamped concrete patio with some detail to it typically runs $5,000 to $10,000. Bigger or fancier climbs from there.

If a number you got is way outside that range in either direction, keep reading, because the reason matters.

What Actually Moves the Price

Getting to your backyard. If my truck can back up close to the pour, great. If your yard is fenced tight with no gate access, we're pumping concrete or running wheelbarrows, and that's labor you pay for. This is the single most common surprise on estimates.

What's under the grass. Around here it's usually clay, and clay holds water. Sometimes we find stumps or buried junk from whoever owned the place in 1987. Getting to solid, well-draining ground is not optional, and some yards need more digging than others.

Tearing out what's there. Demo and hauling of an old cracked patio adds real cost. Concrete is heavy and the dump charges by the ton.

The finish you pick. Broom finish is honest and durable. Stamping takes a bigger crew and more steps on pour day. Color costs money too. Nothing wrong with either choice. You just pay for what you pick.

Size and shape. Curves and cutouts take more forming time than a clean rectangle. A patio wrapped around four sides of something costs more per foot than a simple square of the same area.

Where the Cheap Bid Cuts Corners

If I quote $7,500 and another guy quotes $4,200 for the same patio, somebody is making that difference up somewhere, and it won't be him. Here's where it usually comes from:

• Pouring 3 inches instead of 4
• Skipping base stone, or dumping it without compacting
• No reinforcement in the slab
• Adding water to the mix so it's easier to finish (easier for him, weaker for you)
• Control joints sawed late, spaced wrong, or skipped
• No sealer, no cure, gone by lunch

You won't see any of that the day the crew drives off. The patio looks great in the pictures. You see it two or three winters from now when the freeze and thaw finds every shortcut. I wrote a whole piece on why concrete cracks and when to worry if you want the details.

Know What the Price Is Paying For

The parts of a patio that decide how it ages are the parts you can't see in a picture. How deep the dig goes and how much stone goes back in. How thick the pour is. What's in the mix and what's reinforcing it. Where the joints will run.

That's where the money goes on a job done right, and it's why two quotes for the same patio can sit thousands of dollars apart. Anybody doing this work well can talk about those details all day, because they're what we think about on every pour. If the conversation stays on pattern and color and never gets down to the dirt, that tells you where the corners are getting cut.

Ways to Save That Don't Wreck the Job

I'd rather help you trim a budget the right way than lose you to a corner-cutter. A simple rectangle instead of curves saves forming labor. A broom-finished patio with a stamped border gives you a custom look for a lot less than stamping the whole thing. One color instead of three. A patio is under your family's feet for the next 25 years. Mine has hosted more crab feasts than I can count.
